3 Popular Podcasts that everyone working in FM should follow

Popular Podcast in FM industry

It’s no secret that podcasts have grown in popularity in recent years. With over two million podcasts currently and almost 50 million episodes offered, listeners have numerous choices of genres to choose from and anyone can find a podcast of their interest.

Podcasts fans are always on the hunt for the next podcast that they can become obsessed with, to say the least. With 6.5 million adults in the UK listening to podcasts every week, or in other words, 12% of UK adults listening to at least one podcast per week, the potential spike in listenership numbers are only going to continue. Every niche and the engaged target audience that a brand can think of can be found in the podcast realm.

A podcast is one of the easiest ways to build trust and increase your brand awareness with potential listeners. It generates higher attention and is one of the relatively untapped marketing territories, which has immense potential to allow you to reach an audience that’s likely to relate to and engage with your brand.

But who makes up podcasts’ audiences?

Research by Media Tel’s Connected Screens reveals that UK podcast users tend to be younger (21% millennials), but the audience growth year-on-year has increased and comprises older audiences. Intuitively, there’s an opportunity for more growth among all age groups.

Podcasts have become the most popular form of audio entertainment. The estimates from 2020 show that there were nearly 15 million podcast listeners in the UK alone. For everyone who is working in the Facilities Management industry and built environment, whether you’re an experienced podcast subscriber or a newbie,  we have put together three popular podcasts, all related to the workplace and facilities management and the wider built environment that you cannot miss listening to on the go.

1. EMEX

EMEX 2021, the net-zero and energy management expo released its several seminars as a podcast series which was a huge success and claimed a lot of praise from the attendees for the high quality of the speakers line up and for the relevance of the topics covered.

The seminars covered:

  • Energy Managers for The Future

  • The Future Economics of Battery Installations

  • Transitioning To Net Zero Infrastructure

  • Climate Is Changing: Adapt or Die!

  • Valuing Net Zero & ESG For Workplaces

The series aims to support the collective objective to transition quickly to net-zero and features highlights that include insights from The King’s Cross Estate and how government property is looking to decarbonise its estate. EMEX believes and hopes that making these seminars available to the wider community as a podcast series will support our collective ambitions to accelerate the race to Net-Zero.

EMEX, The Net Zero and Energy Management Exhibition will be back in 2022, on 23rd and 24th November at Excel, London.

2.  WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork

This is an interesting insight into the world and creator of WeWork- the flexible shared workspaces for individuals and companies with branches worldwide (there are currently 49 in London alone).

It is a must-listen if you care about how they went down at all. Produced by podcast giant Wondery, WeCrashed unfolds the story of a unicorn office space company, an unsuccessful IPO, and its plan to revolutionise the workplace experience. It delivers fascinating and detailed content and if you like the content around business wars, you’ll enjoy it.

Listeners suggest anyone with the ambition of founding a company or entering the start-up scene should follow this podcast and learn about the cautionary tale of WeWork. It covers much about the sector, the journey of an entrepreneur and the people you might meet along the way.

This is a six-part podcast series that takes the listener through WeWork’s story, unfolding how the company’s planned initial public offering witnessed a collapse when investors rejected its $20 billion valuation. The series also sheds light on the resignation of WeWork’s CEO Adam Neumann.

Wondery has described this series as: “a story of hope and hubris, big money and bigger screwups, and the lengths people will go to chase unicorns”

3. The Buildings Podcast

The BUILDINGS Podcast presents the latest developments and practices in facility management from energy management, lowering operating costs, maintenance of commercial buildings, life and safety, sustainability, green issues, project management, security, building performance and much more.

From being a companion to walking or to the morning commute, podcasts can be utilised as assimilating educative information, or as part of a personal development plan. The podcast is set to increase, with forecasts predicting close to 20 million listeners by 2024.

Happy podcasting :)
